Testimonials
Recommended by The Rough Guide to New Zealand A gorgeous backpacker hostel in a dreamy setting where even a couple of nights isn’t enough to fully appreciate the relaxing setting, wonderfully welcoming hosts, waterside hot tub, kayaks, fishing and opportunities to visit the local mussel farm or go waterskiing. Access is either a 2-3 hr drive along the Kenepuru Road or by water taxi from Picton, Havelock or Te Mahia.
Recommended by Lonely Planet Hopewell One of the counrtry’s best-loved backpackers according to Budget Backpacker Hostels, and it’s not hard to understand the appeal. Hopewell is on a remote part of Kenepuru Sound, surrounded by native bush opening onto the sea. Access by road is possible but the long winding drive makes water taxi from Te Mahia the best option. Once here, chill out with the roll call of facilities, books and games, outdoor spa, mountain bikes, kayaks, fishing equipment, gourmet pizzas and more.
Recommended by Footprint NZ Excellent establishment in a remote location on Kenepuru Sound, providing the perfect blend of isolation, relaxation, value and comfort. Although accessible by road from Havelock or Picton it is a tortuous drive. A water taxi is therefore recommended and should be made part of the overall experience, or you can fly direct from Wellington (soundsair) to the local airfield from where you can be picked up. A range of budget options from self-contained cottage to well-appointed doubles and 4 shares. Attractive grounds right down to the waters edge. Outdoor spa overlooking the sound, internet, kayaks and plenty of water-based activities on offer with fishing trips being a speciality. Friendly, caring hosts. Warning: one night is not enough. The secret is out so book well ahead. Recommended.
